A Country Michelle Obama Can Be Proud Of

You would think that if if you had received a 160% raise a few years ago, you might have a more positive outlook on your country:

One of Obama's Earmarks Went to Hospital That Employs Michelle Obama

Dan Riehl notes, via Amanda Carpenter, that in the list of earmarks he requested, $1 Million was requested for the construction of a new hospital pavilion at the University Of Chicago. The request was put in in 2006.

You know who works for the University of Chicago Hospital?

Michelle Obama. She's vice president of community affairs.

As Byron noted, "In 2006, the Chicago Tribune reported that Mrs. Obama’s compensation at the University of Chicago Hospital, where she is a vice president for community affairs, jumped from $121,910 in 2004, just before her husband was elected to the Senate, to $316,962 in 2005, just after he took office."

Looks like that raise was worth it.

Again, she saw in a 160% increase in her income after her husband became a US Senator (and just before he shipped off taxpayer money to her employer).

Or, could it be that the raise sickened Michelle (making her less proud of her country), recognizing that the name of the game is political pull and not actual talent, capabilities, merit, etc? And that she's now proud of her country because she knows that Barack's ascendancy will mean the end to such graft...

Somehow, I doubt it...

Another few more questions:
  1. Is this the type of Health Care Reform that Sen. Obama is promising?
  2. What is his opinion on someone in the hospital's Community Affairs department making such large sums?
  3. If he were the hospital administrato, would he have given someone in Community Affairs such a large raise?
  4. Did the Obama's consider the possible increased costs that would be passed on to the hospital's customers for such a salary increase?
  5. Are people with similar experience levels and in similar positions as Michelle compensated ina similar manner? (Or was this increase just another side of Chicago politics?)
I'll have to google to find if Obama has ever attacked the compensation of high priced doctors, administrators, or even pharmaceutical reps. Given his marxist tendencies, I'll assume that he's employed a bit of class warfare in his recent political history...

And the lack of serious questions about this issue from the press is disturbing. Given the Clinton's financial shenanigans and Bill's whoring of his tile of former-President, it'll be impossible for them to make this line of attack. As Instapundit points out, if this were a Republican, the press would be all over it.

Which reminds me of a clip I saw of Richard Stengel, managing editor of Time magazine. Richard is an inside-the-media- guy who you can rely on to provide the conventional wisdom on almost any topic.

Anyway, after Hillary's thrashing of Obama in Ohio and Texas, Stengel's comment was that "this changes the narrative" and that Obama would start getting more negative press (Rezko, Chicago politics, etc). He basically said that previously, the press was just happy to go along with the rhetoric and watch Obama take the nomination. Once that happened, then the press would start looking into Obama's history and do the real journalism required to vet the candidate. (Frankly, I don't believe in that, but let's go with it.)

My immediate reaction to this statement was disbelief. If I was a Democrat voter watching that, I would be infuriated that the press may be allowing me to pin my hopes and dreams on a guy who, underneath all of the rhetoric, may be a complete crook. The press doesn't seem to want to do their job with regard to the Obama's...

HotAir, the aforementioned Dan Riehl, and others are covering.

*** UPDATE 1 ***
TalkLeft is also covering the fact that Obama put in an earmark for General Dynamics, where his Illinois Campaign Finance Chair sits on the board of directors and has a sizable equity position in the company.

No mention of the related situation with his wife on TalkLeft yet - I'm sure they're not pissed about the corruption, just the fact that he pushed through an earmark for a weapons program instead of a Peace Studies & Conflict Resolution department at the University of Illinois.

*** UPDATE 2 ***
Brian provides this link to OpenSecrets, which shows that Barack's #1 contributor is - you guessed it - The University of Chicago at $156k. (BTW, it's also where his economic advisor, Austin Goolsbee, hails from. You may recall that he's the one who reassured the Canadiians that the anti-NAFTA talk was just rhetoric for the idiot voters.)

So, let's tally this up... Obama gets elected to the US Senate. His wife pockets an extra $195k each year (ummm, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 - that's 780 grand) and the University of Chicago also contributes $156k to Obama's presidential campaign. It would seem that he's on the hook to the university for just under $1 million, approximately the same amount of taxpayer money that he earmarked for the university.

Straight out of the taxpayer's pockets and into Obama's! Now that's called Audacity!TM

Si se puede!TM (Tener su dinero)

Dan Riehl has more.
