Yet Another Inconvenient Truth - Part 1,768

Algore gets another smackdown (previous Inconvenient Truths can be read here) this time from James Taylor in the Chicago Sun-Times:

Alarmist global warming claims melt under scientific scrutiny
June 30, 2007

BY JAMES M. TAYLOR

In his new book, The Assault on Reason, Al Gore pleads, "We must stop tolerating the rejection and distortion of science. We must insist on an end to the cynical use of pseudo-studies known to be false for the purpose of intentionally clouding the public's ability to discern the truth." Gore repeatedly asks that science and reason displace cynical political posturing as the central focus of public discourse.

If Gore really means what he writes, he has an opportunity to make a difference by leading by example on the issue of global warming.

A cooperative and productive discussion of global warming must be open and honest regarding the science. Global warming threats ought to be studied and mitigated, and they should not be deliberately exaggerated as a means of building support for a desired political position.

Many of the assertions Gore makes in his movie, ''An Inconvenient Truth,'' have been refuted by science, both before and after he made them. Gore can show sincerity in his plea for scientific honesty by publicly acknowledging where science has rebutted his claims.

For example, Gore claims that Himalayan glaciers are shrinking and global warming is to blame. Yet the September 2006 issue of the American Meteorological Society's Journal of Climate reported, "Glaciers are growing in the Himalayan Mountains, confounding global warming alarmists who recently claimed the glaciers were shrinking and that global warming was to blame."

Gore claims the snowcap atop Africa's Mt. Kilimanjaro is shrinking and that global warming is to blame. Yet according to the November 23, 2003, issue of Nature magazine, "Although it's tempting to blame the ice loss on global warming, researchers think that deforestation of the mountain's foothills is the more likely culprit. Without the forests' humidity, previously moisture-laden winds blew dry. No longer replenished with water, the ice is evaporating in the strong equatorial sunshine."

Gore claims global warming is causing more tornadoes. Yet the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated in February that there has been no scientific link established between global warming and tornadoes.

Gore claims global warming is causing more frequent and severe hurricanes. However, hurricane expert Chris Landsea published a study on May 1 documenting that hurricane activity is no higher now than in decades past. Hurricane expert William Gray reported just a few days earlier, on April 27, that the number of major hurricanes making landfall on the U.S. Atlantic coast has declined in the past 40 years. Hurricane scientists reported in the April 18 Geophysical Research Letters that global warming enhances wind shear, which will prevent a significant increase in future hurricane activity.

Gore claims global warming is causing an expansion of African deserts. However, the Sept. 16, 2002, issue of New Scientist reports, "Africa's deserts are in 'spectacular' retreat . . . making farming viable again in what were some of the most arid parts of Africa."

Gore argues Greenland is in rapid meltdown, and that this threatens to raise sea levels by 20 feet. But according to a 2005 study in the Journal of Glaciology, "the Greenland ice sheet is thinning at the margins and growing inland, with a small overall mass gain." In late 2006, researchers at the Danish Meteorological Institute reported that the past two decades were the coldest for Greenland since the 1910s.

Gore claims the Antarctic ice sheet is melting because of global warming. Yet the Jan. 14, 2002, issue of Nature magazine reported Antarctica as a whole has been dramatically cooling for decades. More recently, scientists reported in the September 2006 issue of the British journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society Series A: Mathematical, Physical, and Engineering Sciences, that satellite measurements of the Antarctic ice sheet showed significant growth between 1992 and 2003. And the U.N. Climate Change panel reported in February 2007 that Antarctica is unlikely to lose any ice mass during the remainder of the century.

Each of these cases provides an opportunity for Gore to lead by example in his call for an end to the distortion of science. Will he rise to the occasion? Only time will tell.

Of course, the Left has already decided that any questioning of Global Warming is the work of evil corporations. Regardless of the facts presented by Mr. Taylor and those scientists and publications he cites, the "progressives" will dismiss his attacks on their Spiritual Leader.

All I have to say is that my belief in Global Warming was seriously damaged when I read the following words by a previously pro-global warming scientist:
"With the publication of the article in Science [in 1995], I gained significant credibility in the community of scientists working on climate change. They thought I was one of them, someone who would pervert science in the service of social and political causes. so one of them let his guard down. A major person working in the area of climate change and global warming sent me an astonishing email that said "We have to get rid of the Medieval Warm Period."

D. Deming, Science 1995

Ignoring scientific evidence (such as the Medieval Warm Period) and bastardizing data (such as the Hockey Stick - which is no longer in an IPCCC reports) are not indicators of science, but faith and dogma.

Wendy, you need to see a nice neuro Joe Black comes to mind..first, his divinity UG major disqualifies gore from talking about global warming than his soaring electricity bills in his mansion....bush the son's c grade mba at yale (with stolen single x mas wreath and all) sounds better...but wendy, kili man jaro's problems yes with deforestation....wendy but, global warming is real....there is preponderance of scientific evidence....not gore's stupid movie....if you still believe warming is all hot air and because of farting....you need to meet Joe black or you meet me...i am your meeting joe black....here's arnold on global warming ...no leftie that you would like to push off the cliff this one eh?

Jeezers, that comment was total crap.

Of course the earth is warming... a little. It has been for years. So what?

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Before it was warming it was cooling.

So what?

Was that a good thing or a bad thing?

And before that it was warming.

And the beat goes on.

Ummm, wow.

there are many other factual errors in Inconvenient Truth which Gore refuses to address.

The alarmism and faith that many of the global warming crowd is my problem. Let's deal with the science, not the politically motivated crap which is currently thrown around as science by the media.

And why is it that every time there is a crisis, the main prescription of the Dems and the MSM is to increase taxes, decrease our rate of economic growth, and/or change human nature?

WHY?

Why do people still think that wind & solar are the best ways to fix the global warming problem, despite the fact that anyone with a little bit of knowledge regarding power generation would know that these technologies cannot produce the amount of energy our 21st century economy requires?

Why don't the global warming alarmists start pushing Nukes, since this is the one technology that can replace coal and has zero CO2 impact? Why can't we be like the French - ??? (did I just write that?) Solar's all right, but nukes do it all night.

Why is it that environmentalists are often more commie-red than green? As an Eagle Scout, I have an appreciation for and understanding of the environment that many environmentalists couldn't comprehend.

Why can't we find a solution to global warming that doesn't require us to 1) revert to a Medieval lifestyle; 2) increase our tax rates; 3) cede even more control of our lives to a central government that will decide what is good for us?

No, it's always the same bullshit when it comes to the environment.

Darn right, Saint. This has nothing to do with the environment and everything to do with politics and power. Makes my blood boil.

Sun on the Earth:

Wendy, my saintie boy, i can't disagree with a major CAVE AT. Fusion nukes are better than centrifugal nukes. Yeah, the Frenchies lead here....Cadarache Chalo...Put some more money to those starving profs writing grant proposals...let us create more and more little suns/sons on the earth with ocean water as the raw material. Science fiction or fact....could be fact says my gut gut..like flying an airplane once was....just think !

yes, will have to bear with fission till fusion happens better than coal less far fetched than other "alternate" sources..

best,
we do meet eye to eye after all brown and blue
