ARC's 1st Law: As a "progressive" online discussion grows longer, the probability of a nefarious reference to Karl Rove approaches one

Liveblogging the SOTU

I'll be liveblogging the State of the Union, and expect that MontereyJohn will likely chime in - along with our good friend, the DesertRat. ARC:Brian is in an undisclosed location and "off the net," orbiting the east coast of this great land. Similar to Commerce Sec'y Don Evans being off-site in case something should happen, Karl has appointed Brian to assume his responsibilities should Don need some Rovian advice. I know I feel safe with Brian ready to take charge of the situation.

Right now I'm watching CNN and they're discussing how Bush has to "turn this around" and "pivot," lest his 2nd term go down in flames. This on the day that Bush has his 2nd (of potentially 3) Supreme Court nominees confirmed. They are also talking about how the Dems are looking for an olive branch and bi-partisanship, all the while that the Dems have pre-released their response talking about how it's sad that the President hasn't apologized for the "culture of corruption."

If anyone needs to "turn things around," it'd be the democrats who haven't had an electoral success since 1996 Presidential election and since 1992 for the Congress.

Key excerpts from the speech here

and we're off...

btw, why does Bush need to turn things around when he has both houses of congress, the supreme court, and the presidency?

The only branch of government that he needs to turn around is the MSM. And we're in the process of doing that through the blogosphere's constant ridicule of the MSM's open partisanship.

St Wendeler said...

Oh, the Dems must HATE his reference to Coretta Scott King. As OW posted on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the Right has NO CLAIM to King's legacy.

St Wendeler said...

There's the olive branch... but the Dems are so sheehanized that they can't see it.

(Fox reported that Sheehan was detained prior to the SOTU b/c she had a banner that she was going to unfurl from the balcony. No doubt all of the nets had her position staked out and were going to run with it on the front page the next day.)

I'm here... loved his calling the Dem's to task.

St Wendeler said...

The Dems expect bi-partisanship, but they're unwilling to clap for non-partisan statements about freedom, justice & the American way (and apple pie, for cryin out loud)...

simply because it's Bush's voice saying the words.

I love how he's directly challenging Murtha & the Dems' idiotic strategy. He knows that the American people are with him when it comes to his strategy vs the Dems.

(Heck, even the Dems are with him, as their vote on the "Murtha" amendment demonstrated.)

Glad for the Hamas statement

DU is for DUers only tonight, aparently... Forum is closed to only those with DU Ids. I used to have one, but was quickly banned.

I wonder why?

Monterey John said...

You, banned? Imagine that.

If I were Iranian, I'd be looking UP a lot in the coming days.

"Democracies in the Middle East will not look like our own, because they will reflect the traditions of their own citizens. Yet liberty is the future of every nation in the Middle East, because liberty is the right and hope of all humanity."

money...

St Wendeler said...

"And tonight, let me speak directly to the citizens of Iran: America respects you, and we respect your country. We respect your right to choose your own future and win your own freedom. And our Nation hopes one day to be the closest of friends with a free and democratic Iran."

Hey, we love the Iranian people... and they must rise up, because the opposition party (aka the Press) won't let me invade if you don't

Addressing the NSA activities... we will not wait to be hit again.

Excellent.

St Wendeler said...

There Chimpy W. McBushitler goes again.... trying to treat drug kingpins and terrorists the same.

When will he learn that terrorists have rights?!?!

St Wendeler said...

that's a pretty concise argument for the NSA surveillance of international communications... (domestic spying according to the opposition party (aka the MSM))

"talkin'" I love it.

Dems are sitting on their hands on that one.... Hillary rolls her eyes & shakes her head

No way she gets the nod in 2008. No way the dems take the house or senate in '06, b/c Rove & his Conspiracy (yours truly) are going to give the Dems a lashing on the issue.

Monterey John said...

Making tax cuts permanent... there is the domestic issue for this year.

St Wendeler said...

Great to go after the protectionists (right/unions) and the statists (left). Given the world economy, there isn't a single president that could move us into a protectionist economy - b/c the economic realities would discourage them from doing so.

But, that doesn't stop politicians and pundits from trying to use the issue at the ballot box.

St Wendeler said...

"This year my budget will cut it again, and reduce or eliminate more than 140 programs that are performing poorly or not fulfilling essential priorities. By passing these reforms, we will save the American taxpayer another 14 billion dollars next year – and stay on track to cut the deficit in half by 2009."

If he sticks to this promise... wow

The clinton age reference was great... as was the cut-away to HRC. She did not look pleased.

Monterey John said...

Scial Security... well, he hasn't thrown in the towel

St Wendeler said...

"So tonight, I ask you to join me in creating a commission to examine the full impact of Baby Boom retirements on Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. This commission should include Members of Congress of both parties, and offer bipartisan answers. We need to put aside partisan politics, work together, and get this problem solved."

Commission should have been last year... well, actually, it should've been in 1995, but we all know that there wasn't cr@p going on in Clinton's presidency.

St Wendeler said...

"We will make wider use of electronic records and other health information technology, to help control costs and reduce dangerous medical errors. We will strengthen Health Savings Accounts – by making sure individuals and small business employees can buy insurance with the same advantages that people working for big businesses now get. "

The dems sit on their hands on this one... I don't get it. Just b/c it's not single-payer socialized medicine, they're against it. you'd think they were a bunch of commies.

St Wendeler said...

BRB... my oldest mini-conspirator is calling.

the energy subsidies that Bush has given out for alternative energy is rarely recognized by the eco-whackos. But there are billions of dollars in subsidies going to companies developing hydrogen fuel cells. The Dems don't like it b/c they don't want energy independence, they want to reduce consumption... .they don't want to find new technologies, they want to change the way we live.

which do YOU think is easier? (back to the constrained vs unconstrained vision of humanity, as documented by Thomas Sowell)

Is that mr. Rogers giving the "rebuttal"?

I like how they keep giving the rebuttal to the newbies in Congress... someone's got to do it.

Isn't there someone more... ummm... "senior" and polished in the Democratic party?

Where's Hillary?

St Wendeler said...

Kaine needs to get a plastic surgeon to staple his left eyebrow down....

not a good look.

talking about fiscal responsibility, but starts talking about spending spending spending...

St Wendeler said...

Heck, a few days ago, the guy was governor-elect.

He's got a folksy rhythm, I'll give him that. But, it's the eyebrow and the Mr. Rogers tone that grinds me.

Oh, and all of the warmed-over socialism that he's spouting.

(DUers freaking out of Kaine's use of 9/11, I'm sure.)

St Wendeler said...

Keep in mind the following about Kaine:

1 - He didn't turn a republican governship into a democratic one... he succeeded a dem.

2 - Despite the applause he receives from OliverWillis & Co, he's not "their" kind of progressive Dem. He's more in line with the DLC than the Deaniac wing of the Dem party. Their selection of him as the rebutt-er indicates that they realize that their brand of politics (which plays well in NYC, DC, and San Francisco) doesn't play well in their home districts.

3 - Less than 3 weeks ago, he was governor-elect.

St Wendeler said...

Oh, and I loved how Obama tried to get as CLOSE as he could to Bush while W was walking out.

Does OliverWillis think HE'S a sellout like Lieberman?

desert Rat said...

Kaine and the Dems repeatedly say they is a better way, but they still do not offer any solid proposals other than higher taxes on industry. Will they ever be anything more than an opposition party?

desert Rat said...

One of the things the MSM is doing that really frosts my cookies is using people such as George Stephanopoilis and David Gergan as supposed journalists. They are former Democratic operatives. I concede they have a good insight into politics and government, but don't pretend they are journalists.

Desert Rat said...

Anderson Cooper on CNN just asked Nancy Polosi what the Democrats would do about Iraq. She's waffling again by simply attacking the Administration's position. She now says that the American people are not safer because of Iraq, but declines to state why.

Brian said...

Well it must have been a good speech, because all I see watching CNBC (Hardball) tonight, is Mathews asking his guests how the Dem's can turn things around....

Btw, can I come down yet? ;-)

St Wendeler said...

Sure, Rove is doing fine...

Desert Rat - What I REALLY hate about MSM is when they call Gergen a "republican"

There's no other person who represents the inside-the-beltway conventional wisdom like Gergen.
