I'm Confused

There are numerous complaints from the Left that the Feds haven't jumped onto the crisis quickly enough, deflecting blame from the local mayor (Nagin) who is a complete putz and the Governor (Blanco). Both failed to follow their evac plans and let countless thousands take refuge in the Superdome - which a blogger predicted would turn into a hellhole hours before the storm hit.

Well, now it appears that when the Feds want to remove some of the incompetence at the local and state level (by putting FEMA bureaucrats in charge of the relief effort), the Left is crying foul and suddenly a proponent of state's rights... Check out this post from DU.

Behind the scenes, a power struggle emerged, as federal officials tried to wrest authority from Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco (D). Shortly before midnight Friday, the Bush administration sent her a proposed legal memorandum asking her to request a federal takeover of the evacuation of New Orleans, a source within the state's emergency operations center said Saturday.

Blanco made two moves Saturday that protected her independence from the federal government: She created a philanthropic fund for the state's victims and hired James Lee Witt, Federal Emergency Management Agency director in the Clinton administration, to advise her on the relief effort.

Bush keeps pushing country to donate to the Red Cross. Now we know why, Red Cross is more under Government control.

So, the question is: Does the Left really want the Feds to come into Louisiana to save the day? Or do they think that Blanco's performance over the past week merits her continued management of the entire effort? I have a feeling that they want to keep pushing the "Bush is incompetent" theme...
